SEC intensifies up cyber inquiry with emphasis on IT, telecom industries, Bloomberg News reports

March 26 (mod1s) - The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is questioning technology and telecom businesses how they handled the SolarWinds (SWI.N), opens new tab cyber incident in 2020, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday, citing individuals familiar with the situation.

The breach of information technology business SolarWinds, one of the widest and most sophisticated cyber assaults in the United States, was uncovered in December 2020 and gave away access to thousands of enterprises and government agencies that utilized its products.

Hackers were able to utilize the company's main network management software called Orion as a springboard into U.S. government networks and overseas targets.

The regulator has sought for internal communications of impacted firms regarding the cyber attack's effect, searching for weaknesses in corporate security and for additional cyber events, the article, opens new tab stated, citing persons familiar with the case who did not name the companies.

The SEC did not immediately reply to a Reuters request for comment on the article.

Last year, the SEC sued the software business and its senior information security official, charging they cheated investors by misrepresenting cybersecurity deficiencies during the major attack.
