WASHINGTON, March 15 (mod1s) - The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Friday said it was continuing to examine a cyber security breach originally reported on Feb. 16, but reiterated that the email accounts of senior management were not compromised.

A representative for the global lender said 11 IMF email accounts had been hacked in the incident, although they did not include those of IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva or other high officials. All email accounts have subsequently been re-secured, the IMF stated in a statement.

"The MD and her top leadership team were not targeted," the spokeswoman told Reuters.

"The investigation determined that eleven IMF email accounts were compromised," IMF stated, adding that those accounts had been re-secured and there was no sign of additional penetration.

A decision was taken to reveal the incident - the IMF's first since 2011 - given the global lender's commitment to openness and as a warning to its personnel to guarantee rigorous adherence to cyber security measures, a source familiar with the case told Reuters.

The IMF said it implemented corrective procedures as a consequence of the inquiry, which was done with the support of independent cyber security experts.

"We have no evidence of any penetration beyond these email accounts at this point in time. The inquiry into this occurrence is underway," it stated.
