SAN FRANCISCO, March 7 (mod1s) - Google has been extolling the various advancements in the first building fully conceived and constructed by the web giant, even transferring personnel there to concentrate on its highest-profile project: generative artificial intelligence. But, others say they wish the advances had included good Wi-Fi.

The "Bay View" skyscraper, situated on the Alphabet (GOOGL.O), opens new tab unit's Mountain View, California, headquarters, opens new tab, has been plagued for months by unusable or, at best, intermittent Wi-Fi, according to six individuals familiar with the problem.

Its recliner-laden collaborative workplaces do not function well for teams carrying around computers, as workers must connect into ethernet cables at their workstations to receive constant internet access. Some make do by utilizing their phones as hotspots.

The corporation marketed the new building and surrounding campus in a 229-page glossy book showcasing its cutting-edge features, such as "Googley interiors" and "an environment where everyone has the tools they need to be successful."

But, a Google representative confirmed, "we’ve had Wi-Fi connectivity issues in Bay View." She claimed Google "made several improvements to address the issue," and the firm intended to release a remedy in coming weeks.

According to one AI engineer allocated to the building, which also houses members of the advertising team, the malfunctioning Wi-Fi has been no help for Google pushing a three day per week return-to-office requirement.

"You’d think the world’s leading internet company would have worked this out," he remarked. Like others, he talked to Reuters on the condition of anonymity because Google has not permitted them to comment about work conditions.

Managers have urged staff to wander outdoors or relax at the next café where the Wi-Fi connection is better. Some were provided new computers lately with more powerful Wi-Fi processors.

Google has not officially stated the causes for the Wi-Fi troubles, but workers claim the 600,000-square-foot building’s swooping, wave-like rooftop swallows bandwidth like the Bermuda Triangle.

Beneath that oceanic dome, Google personnel are rushing to bring out the newest versions of the powerful artificial intelligence program known as Gemini, a vital to Google's future. Such AI has become a Silicon Valley sensation with the general release of ChatGPT in late 2022.

Asked by Reuters whether the campus had adequate Wi-Fi, Gemini looked cautiously confident. "It is highly likely that the Bay View campus has Wi-Fi," the software answered.

"As the headquarters of a major tech company, Google, it would be surprising if it did not."
