EU implements steps shortly to minimize election dangers on X, TikTok, Facebook

March 20 (mod1s) - Under EU recommendations due to be implemented next week, Elon Musk's X, TikTok, Facebook and other large internet platforms are required to act to limit threats to elections or face penalties, a European Commission official said on Wednesday.

The EU executive had in February issued the draft guidelines, part of the Digital Services Act (DSA) which mandates Big Tech to do more to fight unlawful and harmful material on their platforms.

Concerns regarding electoral meddling and misleading AI-generated material have risen in the run-up to the European Parliament elections in June.

"The Commission will utilize these principles as a type of check list. They are not legally binding on the platforms. The corporations are allowed to determine how to manage risks," a Commission official said.

"If the platforms do not address the risks, they can be fined under the DSA."

As significant technology firms and search engines play a big role in "shaping public opinion and voter behaviour, it is key that they take effective measures to mitigate risks related to electoral processes," a Commission spokeswoman said.

The Commission's recommendations would "further specify risk mitigations measures and best practices, notably around generative AI content," the spokeswoman added.

Companies will risk penalties as high as 6% of their annual worldwide revenue for breaking the Digital Services Act.

Facebook parent Meta Platforms (META.O), opens new tab, YouTube parent Google and TikTok have in recent weeks taken different actions, including putting up teams to prevent misinformation, AI misuse and covert influence linked to the European Parliament elections.
