ChatGPT banned in NYC schools over learning impact concerns

The NYC Department of Education has prohibited the use of ChatGPT by students and instructors in New York City schools since there are substantial concerns about its usage impeding learning and leading to disinformation.

The prohibition was initially reported by Chalkbeat, which verified the New York City Department of Education implemented it. The company runs the biggest school system in the U.S., so others could follow with identical judgments.

ChatGPT is a next-gen chatbot intended for dialogue-format user interactions, introduced by OpenAI in November 2022. The chatbot has proved tremendously disruptive for various areas, including programming and essay writing.

Another industry that AI-based chatbots like ChatGPT are projected to change is internet searching, since such tools can deliver deeper replies to search queries and enable users to locate what they're looking for using natural language.

Microsoft is apparently trying to incorporate ChatGPT into Bing to give its search engine an advantage over rivals like Google Search.

NYC Dept. of Education is anxious about the information that ChatGPT may transmit to pupils, especially the safety and veracity of its replies. Moreover, the group thinks young children would develop complacent and lack the critical abilities to assess material.

Jenna Lyle, Deputy Press Secretary of the NYC Department of Education, told BleepingComputer:

Due to concerns about detrimental consequences on student learning and issues over the safety and veracity of material, access to ChatGPT is banned on New York City Public Schools’ networks and devices.

While the technology may be able to offer fast and simple answers to problems, it does not promote critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, which are crucial for academic and lifetime success.

The restriction pertains to school equipment and internet networks, thus students and teachers who still choose to utilize ChatGPT despite the NYC Dept. of Education directives may still do so using personal devices and mobile networks.

The relatively simple bypass offers a solid argument for those who oppose the action as unproductive, asking for concerned groups to embrace the new technology and assist kids explore and learn how to utilize it to their favor.

A new experiment by professor Scott Graham at the University of Texas indicates that A.I. writing may play a helpful instructional function, helping students develop their genre knowledge, content revision, and writing style abilities.

Still, the NYC Department of Education's worries concerning the veracity of information given by ChatGPT are justified.

Last month, the Q&A site Stack Overflow banned ChatGPT-generated responses on the platform for being false and misleading too frequently.
